From Rotorua: WAI-O-TAPU Thermal Wonderland - Half Day Tour

About This Experience
A four-hour round trip from central Rotorua that does the two things most visitors come to Wai-O-Tapu for — the Lady Knox Geyser presentation and the thermal park itself — and gets you back to town by early afternoon. Entry to the park is included in the fare, so there is nothing further to pay at the gate.
You are driven the 31 km south on State Highway 5 with a driver-guide who narrates the way out and is on hand at each stop. At Wai-O-Tapu the walking is self-guided: you get roughly two hours to take the loops at your own pace, which is enough for the Champagne Pool, the Artist's Palette and the Devil's Bath without rushing.
The itinerary also takes in the Wai-O-Tapu mud pool, the largest in New Zealand, and a stop back at Lake Rotorua on the way in. It is the least expensive way to see the park without a car, and the shortest — useful if you have an afternoon already committed elsewhere.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.7/5 by 130 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
My daughter and I enjoyed every aspect of our trip, including sustainable tourism. A half-day was the perfect amount of time to explore the three trail options and enjoy a light lunch or snack at the cafe. We highly recommend visiting Wai-o-Tapu Geothermal Wonderland.

It was very good, our guide was Ambros and he had a new chap with him on his first day. Our guides did a great job and stayed with us throughout the tour and answered any questions we asked them, very happy 😊

Frequently Asked Questions
Does this half-day tour include Wai-O-Tapu entry?
Yes. The park entry ticket and return transport from Rotorua are both in the fare. Lunch, extra drinks and tips are not included.
Is there hotel pickup?
No — this one departs from the Rotorua i-SITE on Fenton Street rather than from hotels. Wait outside at the Fenton Street bus stop; the operator emails the vehicle details the day before.
How much time do you get inside the park?
About two hours of self-guided walking, plus the Lady Knox Geyser presentation. That covers the short loop comfortably and the full 3 km circuit if you keep moving.
Is the guide with you inside Wai-O-Tapu?
The driver-guide commentates on the road and is available at each stop, but the walk through the geothermal park itself is self-guided. If you want a guide walking the loops with you, the eco-thermal morning tour does that.
