How Much Does Wai-O-Tapu Cost?

Adult entry to Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is NZ$52 (about $29) on the park’s own booking page, children aged 5 to 15 pay NZ$19 (about $11), and under-5s go free. Tours that include entry start at about $100 from Rotorua and $200 from Auckland.

Updated October 2026

The main differences

  • A good all-round choice: the Wai-O-Tapu entry ticket, from $27 per adult. It is sold by the park itself and covers the Lady Knox Geyser, all three walking loops and parking.
  • GetYourGuide was about $2 cheaper per adult than the park's own booking page. The park charged NZ$52 (about $29) including fees when we checked.
  • Families of four pay less with the park's family pass than with four separate tickets. Two adults and two children pay NZ$126 (about $71) on the park's page. GetYourGuide has no family ticket.
  • Without a car, the cheapest way in from Rotorua is about $100. The half-day tour is from $101, and the Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu morning tour adds hotel pickup, a guided walk and a second park for $3 more.
  • From Auckland, a day trip that includes entry costs about $200 to $245. The extra over a Rotorua tour pays for six hours or so of driving.
  • Every price here is per person. On a tour, a group of four pays four fares.

Wai-O-Tapu has one admission ticket, and most tours that stop there include it in the fare. So the price question comes down to two things: where you buy the ticket, and how you get to a park 30 km south of Rotorua. Paying more does not get you a different park. It changes how you get there, whether anyone explains the pools to you, and what else you see that day.

What does a Wai-O-Tapu entry ticket cost?

The park sells entry on its own booking page, linked from waiotapu.co.nz, and through GetYourGuide, where the Wai-O-Tapu entry ticket is listed by Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland itself. It is rated 4.6/5 from more than 3,200 reviews. Both tickets cover the same things: full-day entry, the 10:15am Lady Knox Geyser presentation, the three walking loops and a guide map.

Prices checked 19 October 2026. The park’s prices include its booking fees, and both sellers can change prices by date, so check the booking page for the current price. Conversions are approximate, at NZ$1 = US$0.567 (ECB reference rate, 19 October 2026).

For two adults, GetYourGuide works out at $54 at the starting price, against about $58 on the park’s page. The GetYourGuide ticket also carries free cancellation. For a family of four, the park’s family pass is the better deal: four separate tickets on the park’s page cost NZ$142 (about $80), so the pass saves NZ$16 (about $9).

The park is cashless, so you pay by card or EFTPOS whether you book ahead or on arrival. Parking at the visitor centre is free with the ticket.

Which option we’d book

If you have a car, book the entry ticket and drive. It is the cheapest option by a wide margin, it is rated 4.6/5 from more than 3,200 reviews, and you can be at the geyser car park by 9:45am on your own schedule. Our breakdown of the entry ticket →

If you are staying in Rotorua without a car

The Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu eco-thermal morning tour is from $104 and rated 4.8/5 from more than 380 reviews. Its listing says the van collects you from your hotel, the tour runs from 8am to 1pm, and it includes about an hour of guided walking at Wai-O-Tapu, the 10:15am geyser and Waimangu Volcanic Valley. The GetYourGuide inclusions list only the Waimangu admission, but the operator, Elite Adventures, says on its own site that the price includes gate entry to both parks. Its own adult fare there is NZ$230 (about $130), so GetYourGuide was the cheaper place to book when we checked. Lunch is not included. Our breakdown →

If you want three parks in one day

The Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu and Te Puia full-day tour, from the same operator, is from $190 and rated 4.8/5 from more than 200 reviews. Food is extra. Our breakdown →

Tour prices compared

Most of the price of a tour is the transport and the length of the day. The park entry inside each fare is the same ticket you could buy yourself for $27.

Around $100 to $110: half-day trips from Rotorua. You get the park, the geyser and the drive there and back. The half-day tour from Rotorua, from $101, starts from a meeting point in central Rotorua; hotel pickup is listed as not included, and the walk in the park is on your own.

Around $150 to $190: longer days from Rotorua, Tauranga or Hamilton. These add a second or third park, the Redwoods or Taupō. The three-park day from Rotorua sits at the top of this band.

Around $200 to $245: day trips from Auckland. Twelve or thirteen hours, about half of it on the road. The extra money at the top of the band goes on lunch, Te Puia or Hobbiton.

Above $450: private trips and multi-day tours. A private car from Auckland, or two or three days that add Hobbiton, Waitomo and a night in Rotorua.

Every tour below is linked, with its rating and review count beside it. A low review count is a reason to read the listing carefully, not a verdict on the tour.

Prices checked 19 October 2026, per person. Operators use dynamic pricing, so these figures are a guide; check the booking page for the current price. Tours that only fly over the parks, or whose listings do not include Wai-O-Tapu at all, are left out.

At the starting price, two people pay $202 for the half-day tour from Rotorua and $208 for the morning tour, and four adults pay $404 and $416. Child fares are lower on many tours, so a family’s total depends on the children’s ages. The two-day Hobbiton, Waitomo, Rotorua and Taupō tour books a double room by default, so a solo traveller should check the room options at booking.

What the price does not include

  • Lunch, on most tours. The table notes the tours that include it. The Wai-O-Tapu visitor centre has a café, and the park is cashless.
  • Hotel pickup on the half-day tour. Its listing puts hotel pickup and drop-off under not included, so you make your own way to the meeting point in town.
  • Wai-O-Tapu entry on the Taupō day trip, as listed. The Taupō day trip with Orakei Korako or Waiotapu, from $148 and rated 4.8/5 from 62 reviews, lists the Orakei Korako admission if you pick that option, and no Wai-O-Tapu admission. Ask the operator before booking the Waiotapu option, or add NZ$52 (about $29) per adult to the fare.
  • Wai-O-Tapu entry on some Auckland combination tours. A few Auckland tours sell Wai-O-Tapu as one of several options, and entry is only included if you choose it at booking.

Tours that offer less for the price

Some listings are too new to judge. A newer Elite Adventures tour that adds a boat trip on Lake Rotomahana to Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu, the Wai-O-Tapu and Waimangu tour with a boat trip, is from $161 and had a single review when we checked, so it has no track record yet. From Tauranga, the Wai-O-Tapu cruise-ship tour from Tauranga is from $134 with no reviews yet.

Private trips from Auckland cost more than twice as much as a shared day trip. The private trip with Taupō and Huka Falls is from $480 per person and rated 4.9/5 from only 10 reviews. It is priced per person even though the car is private, so check the total for your group before you book.

Should you pay more?

Pay more for a tour if you have no car, or if you want a guide on the tracks with you, as on the Elite Adventures morning tour from Rotorua. If you are driving, the entry ticket gives you the same pools, the same geyser and the same loops for $27, and you can walk them at your own pace.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a ticket to Wai-O-Tapu?

Is the Lady Knox Geyser included in the ticket?

Do Wai-O-Tapu tours include the entry fee?

The tours we’d book from Rotorua and Auckland include it. A few listings sell Wai-O-Tapu as an option, and the Taupō day trip from Rotorua does not list Wai-O-Tapu admission, so read the inclusions before you book.

No. The park is cashless and takes all major credit cards and EFTPOS.
